Hasan Hajmohammedabdullah“

2. Andrea Tapia:

“Dear Sir/Madam,

After reading on your website that I meet the established requirements, I wanted to write you this letter to explain the context of my educational career and why I should be the one to obtain the scholarship. I have a great pleasure to be able to write this application letter and participate in the Vela Scholarship.

My name is Andrea Fernanda Tapia Chavez. I am from Lima, Peru. I am currently studying Political and Social Studies with a minor in Public Law at the University of Würzburg, Germany. Growing up in a third world country has made me realize how much I want to help people and countries to improve their development and create better circumstances so that they can also have a better future. The reality of poverty and corruption in South America is something that has made me decide to come to Europe, it made me want to become an international politician, so I give help back to countries who need support in the international sphere. I remember when I was 10 years old and I saw several small children working in the streets to be able to have something to eat, that day I realized that my goal and my greatest dream would be to help all those in vulnerable situations to have a better quality of life and I believe that I am on the right path to achieve my goal.

My passion started since I was in high school and participated in many MUN´s (Model of United Nations), there I realized the importance of international organizations and international contracts between countries to maintain international peace, security and the development of poverty eradication. I started the university in Lima in 2016, my major was Law and there I affirmed once again how much I am passionate and interested in international relations. It is there that I also became very interested in international public law. In 2019 I decided to make an exchange program with the university of Würzburg and I was motivated and happy to learn a new language and to learn more about international law, nevertheless I found the major of Political and Social Studies and after researching and having many conversations with my professors, I knew I wanted to study Political and Social Studies, because it gives me a specific approach to international politics, how to resolve international conflicts and also had the opportunity to continue studying law as my minor.

Throughout my studies at both High School and university I have shown dedication and effort in the areas of international politics, law, and human rights, not only because of the notes but also because of the capacity that I have shown to be able to transfer all the concepts that I know to solving problems and proposing original projects.

Because of Covid my situation as an international student is currently really hard, because I lost my part-time job and it is very difficult for me to pay the costs and expenses that I have as a student in Germany; getting help from my parents it´s not an option due to the extreme economic crisis that exists at the moment in South America, many people  have lost their jobs including my parents. Going through this situation where I lost my job and the difficulty  to cover my living costs, I also took advantage of this time to take many extracurricular courses to get C1 level in the German language and also attend winter courses to learn more about law international between Europe and South America.

I consider that I have the necessary requirements to be able to acquire this scholarship and also demonstrate how this scholarship could contribute more to my professional development. I am also firmly committed to repaying your kindness through the use of the knowledge that I will acquire in my next evolution as an efficient worker of the society.

Yours faithfully,

Andrea Tapia”

Dear Team VELA,

I am writing to express my interest in research in your scholarship. The experience of losing a beloved one to cancer—a condition prevalent in India, has played a vital role in choosing my scientific career. Every experience during my undergraduate course—academic and otherwise has constantly made it clear for me that higher education in a highly specialized area is what calls me. Hence I am currently pursuing my master‟s program in Biosciences at University of Wuerzburg with specialization in “Molecular and Computational Biology” which I was always motivated to study in greater depth. I have utilized all opportunities that came for me to prepare myself for the impending higher education that I would seek for myself. My experience in carrying our academic research began with two summers spent as a „Summer Research Fellow‟ at Indian Institute of Science and later at Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics; These prestigious fellowships were funded and awarded by the Indian Academy of Sciences (INSA-NASI-IASc).

I spent my time working at Dr.Suparna's laboratory during my senior year, which was a very formative time in my life where I realized a career in cancer research is an inspiring track to drive through. Later, I got an excellent opportunity to work with industry professionals in the area of cancer therapeutics at the Molecular Biology Department in Biocon Research Limited, which is the leading Biopharmaceutical Company based in Bangalore, India. It was a remarkable experience as part of the innovations team, where I realized the significance of translational research. I am positive that these experiences have molded my inquisitive nature which is an important aspect for my future research in the chosen field.

I have a deep passion for research in cancer as it is the major distress worldwide. I am intrigued to understand the dynamic aspects such as molecular, cellular and genetics of cancer, that shaped my interest to sign up for a challenging research specialization in “Molecular and Computational Biology” at “University of Wuerzburg”. Discovering signaling cascades were crucial for understanding cancer cell survival. The overwhelming majority of cancer-related deaths in humans are due to metastasis; our understanding of its underlying biological process remains obscure. Hence my research focus is to gain a deep insight to discover the regulatory networks that promote metastatic progression of various cancer types and to develop specific anti-cancer strategies via stem cell-based regenerative medicine and to merge them with cancer informatics.

Being a curious mind and the research-oriented person I am open to many approaches because I believe in solving the problems and getting better solutions to the problems. In the near future, my dream is to utilize the knowledge to make an impact on society and healthcare. I can imagine a bright future in the current research and cultural environment. I believe that the scholarship from “VELA” will equip me with enough motivation to train for my master‟s research to open up a new path to explore the previously unrevealed mechanism of gene expression regulation in cancer cells and lead to a therapeutic application in patients at complication for metastatic relapse. Thanks.
